Pavel Yakovlevich Zaltsman. Soviet artist, graphic artist, writer. Honoured Art Worker of the Kazakh SSR (1962). Was born in Kishinev. After graduating in 1929 from the last three grades of the 1st Soviet secondary school in Leningrad he worked as an illustrator in Leningrad magazines ‘Rezets’, ‘Perelom’, ‘Stroyka’, ‘Young Proletarian’ (1931-1932). After graduating in 1929 from the last three grades of the 1st Soviet secondary school in Leningrad he worked as an illustrator in Leningrad magazines ‘Rezets’, ‘Perelom’, ‘Stroyka’, ‘Young Proletarian’ (1931-1932). From 1928 he was an intern at the film studio ‘Belgoskino’ with artists A. A. Arapov and V. Egorov. In 1929 he met P. N. Filonov, became his follower and a member of the group ‘Masters of Analytical Art’ (MAI - Filonov's school). At the same time he became a member of LOSSKh (Leningrad branch of the Artists Union of the USSR, 1932), but did not renew his membership after the war. In 1932-1933, together with other students of P. N. Filonov, he participated in the preparation of illustrations for the traditional Finnish epic ‘Kalevala’. From 1930 he worked at Lenfilm as an assistant to artists P. Betaki and F. Bernshtam, from 1931 to 1941 he was a production designer on film shoots. From 1932 to 1939 he participated in film expeditions to the Urals, Pamir, Karelia, Transbaikalia, Central Asia. On 27 July 1942 he was evacuated with ‘Lenfilm’ to Almaty. He worked as a production designer on Sh. Aimanov's films ‘White Rose’ (1943), ‘Daughter of the Steppes’, ‘Poem about Love’, ‘Crossroads’, ‘Golden Horn’ (1948), ‘Botagoz’ by P. Bogolyubov, ‘Dzhigit Girl’ (1955) and others. Since 1948 he taught the history of art at the art school, the Academy of Architecture, the Pedagogical Institute, at the philological faculty of the Kazakh University and at the scriptwriting courses at the film studio ‘Kazakhfilm’ in Almaty. Since 1957 - member of the Union of Cinematographers, since 1967 - of the Artists Union of the Kazakh SSR. Saltsman's graphics and paintings are in the State Russian Museum, Tretyakov Gallery, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Oriental Arts, A. Kasteev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Museum of Modern Art (Astana) and in private collections. скрыть
