Yerzhanov Mels Tulekovich. Soviet and Kazakhstani theatre artist, graphic artist. Honoured Art Worker of Kazakhstan. He was born in 1931 in Emba station of Djurun district of Aktobe region. In 1932 his father was repressed and the family moved to Almaty. Mother Ainesh became an actress of the Kazakh Drama Theatre named after M. Auezov, where later the son would design performances. In 1932 his father was repressed and the family moved to Almaty. Mother Ainesh became an actress of the Kazakh Drama Theatre named after M. Auezov, where later the son would design performances. In 1957 Yerzhanov graduated from the Almaty Art School, and since 1961 he became a member of the Artists Union of Kazakhstan. Mels Yerzhanov tried himself in different genres and techniques: in graphics, when he worked in the magazine ‘Shmel’ since its foundation in 1956, in monumental painting (mosaic on the building of the railway station in Kyzyl-Orda - the work of his hands), prepared about a hundred posters. He participated in all-union and inter-republican exhibitions of poster artists of the republics of Central Asia and Kazakhstan in Dushanbe. In the Soviet time there were two large exhibitions of his works: to the 50th anniversary and to the 60th anniversary. Famous works are ‘Central Asia’, ‘Baltic’, ‘Petersburg’, ‘Verny - Almaty’. The artist worked on the last one from 1967 until the end of his life. M. Yerzhanov opened two folk galleries in Bakanas village and in Kapchagai city, having presented them about 100 of his works.
