Tatevosyan Hovhannes Karapetovich. Soviet painter. People's Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1944). Born in 1889 in Yerevan, Armenia. In 1908 - 1909 studied at the Tiflis Art School. At the Tiflis Drawing School, Hovhannes' teacher was Yeghishe Tatevosyan, an outstanding painter who developed as an artist under the direct influence of the work and personality of V. Polenov. Tatevosyan Hovhannes Karapetovich. Soviet painter. People's Artist of the Uzbek SSR (1944). Born in 1889 in Yerevan, Armenia. In 1908 - 1909 studied at the Tiflis Art School. At the Tiflis Drawing School, Hovhannes' teacher was Yeghishe Tatevosyan, an outstanding painter who developed as an artist under the direct influence of the work and personality of V. Polenov. In 1915 Tatevosyan came to Samarkand, where he organised an art school (1918 - 1919) and a commission for the protection of antiquities (1919 - 1920). In 1921 Tatevosyan enters Vkhutemas at the faculty of ceramics. In 1927 he returned to Samarkand, organised the studio ARIZO (Association of workers of fine arts), and in 1930 - Isofabrika (experimental-production workshops of spatial arts). In 1932 he moved to Tashkent and worked as a curator of the funds of the Museum of Art. Professor and head of the painting department of the Tashkent Theatre and Art Institute. Founder of the Association of Workers of Fine Arts (ARIZO). Member of the Association of Travelling Exhibitions, member of RABIS and the Board of the Artists Union of Uzbekistan, People's Artist of the Uzbek SSR. Tatevosyan's work played a significant role in the formation of the fine arts of the Uzbek SSR. He is the author of subtle thematic paintings (‘Melon Bazaar’ (1929), ‘Road to Gardens’, ‘Spring’ (1961) - both in the Museum of Arts of the Uzbek SSR. One of the first to address the theme of the Civil War and the construction of socialism in Central Asia, creating thematic paintings ‘Raid of the Basmachi on the kishlak’ and ‘Prosperous Life’ (1933). In 1935 he painted ‘Kolkhozniy Toi’ - a huge multi-figure canvas transforming a rural harvest festival into the apotheosis of collective farm life. In 1937 Tatevosyan was the chief artist of the Uzbekistan pavilion at the All-Union Exhibition of Economic Achievements in Moscow. In 1941-1948 he worked on a series of paintings dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. Tatevosyan's solo exhibitions were held in 1912 (Yerevan), 1929 (Samarkand), 1949 and 1964 (both in Tashkent).
