Romanov Sakhi (Alexander) Ilyich. Kazakhstani graphic artist, film artist, painter. Member of the Artists Union of the USSR (1958). Honoured Art Worker of Kazakhstan. People's Artist of the Kazakh SSR (1981). Awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and the Order of Parasat. He was born in 1926 in Kazaly district of Kzyl-Orda region, from the age of six he was brought up in an orphanage. The inquisitive boy was passionately engaged in drawing and modelling. Later he began to attend the art studio at the city department of culture, where V.P. Efanov and G.K. Savitsky taught. In 1944 he entered the Moscow Secondary Art School. Graduated from VGIK, his teachers were F.S. Bogorodsky, Y.I. Pimenov and G.M. Shegal (1950-1955). His series of illustrations for Kazakh folk tales ‘Forty Unbelievable Tales’ is notable for its juicy humour and sharpness. Sakhi's illustrations to folk tales ‘Aldar-Kose’ (1958) and a series of drawings about the life and work of the Kazakh folk composer Kurmangazy also gained great fame. The artist made illustrations to the works of M. Auezov. Participant of exhibitions since 1949. Worked at the studio ‘Kazakhfilm’, was a production designer of many films, which was reflected in his easel works. He designed the films ‘Winged Gift’ (1957), ‘Road of Life’ (1961), ‘Both in jest and in earnest’ (1963), ‘Traces go beyond the horizon’ (1965), ‘Wings of Song’ (1967). Romanov's painting is energetic, multi-coloured and spectacular, marked by the stamp of originality and figurative brightness. Creativity of the artist is a significant contribution to the treasury of fine arts of Kazakhstan. From picturesque works it is possible to note especially the picture ‘Evening on dzhailau’ (1957), ‘Song to labour’ (1958), ‘Young shepherds’ (1960). In recent years, Sakhi Romanov was fond of landscape. His landscapes are characterised by soft, gentle colouring. The works of the artist are in the State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after A. Kasteev and other museums of the republic. скрыть
