Nikolai Krymov was a Russian and Soviet painter and teacher. People's Artist of the RSFSR (1956), corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1949). He was born in the family of the artist P. A. Krymov, who painted in the manner of the 'peredvizhniki'. He received his initial professional training from his father. In 1904 he entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he first studied at the architectural department, and in 1907-1911 - in the landscape studio of A. M. Vasnetsov. Already in his early works adhered to symbolism - including as a graphic designer of the magazine ‘Golden Fleece’ (1906-1909). Considering that the essence of painting is not paint, but tone (filling the colour with light), Krymov proposed as an ideal point of reference burning match on the background of a brightly sunlit wall. He expressed his theoretical views in the article ‘On Levitan’ (1938). He made a significant contribution to scenography, having designed in the Moscow Art Theatre ‘Hot Heart’ (1926) and ‘Talents and Admirers’ (1933) by A. N. Ostrovsky, as well as ‘Untilovsk’ by L. M. Leonov (1928). In 1919-1930 worked a lot and as a teacher - in Prechistensky practical institute, Higher Art and Technical Workshops (Vhutemas) and the Moscow Regional Art School in memory of 1905. The peculiarity of Krymov's pedagogical gift was that in each of his students he saw and developed individuality. Krymov's landscape painter pupils became genre painters, historical painters, portraitists - S. P. Viktorov, Y. P. Kugach, M. P. Ivanov-Radkevich, F. P. Reshetnikov, N. K. Solomin. скрыть
