Aitymbay Moldabekov. Soviet and Kazakhstani painter, theatre artist. A participant of the WWII. Member of the Artists Union of the USSR (1959). Honoured Art Worker of Kazakhstan. He was born on 15 May 1924 in Akmolinsk in the family of a shepherd. In 1928 he got to the orphanage of Petropavlovsk city. He was born on 15 May 1924 in Akmolinsk in the family of a shepherd. In 1928 he got to the orphanage of Petropavlovsk city. Having demobilised, he entered the art school of Almaty, where he got a speciality of the artist-painter and artist-decorator. Since the mid-60s Aitymbay was the Chief Artist of the Art Fund of Kazakhstan, later the Congress of the Artists Union elected Moldabekov the Chairman of the Fund. Since 1950 Aitymbai began to participate in exhibitions. In 1952, Moldabekov began working in the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet named after Abay, starting as head of the decoration shop to the chief artist. During his time at the theatre, Aitymbay designed numerous productions, including the opera-tale ‘Kaschey the Immortal’ by Rimsky-Korsakov (1957), the ballet ‘Kambar and Nabar’ by V.V. Velikanov. Velikanov's ballet ‘Kambar and Nazym’, operas ‘Faust’ (1956), ‘Floria Tosca’ (1957) and others. The most exciting impression is left by his sketches on motifs of fairy tales and legends. From 1981 to 1985 he served time in the Kushmurun camp. He was expelled from the Artists Union, his studio was taken away. In 1987 he unconditionally re-joined the Artists Union of the USSR. During the Reconsruction period, Moldabekov wrote paintings dedicated to the self-consciousness of the people, defining the fulcrum and the path to the future: ‘Conversation with Ancestors’, ’Shakarim. Death of a Poet’, “Turkic Legend”, “Altynsarin”, “The Eagle and the Wolf Clash”, “The Return of the Batyrs”.
