He left the institute and entered the art studio at the Leningrad State Bolshoi Drama Theatre named after M. Gorky in 1932, from which he graduated in 1936. In 1937-1938 Kulakhmet served in the army. On his return from the army he worked as an artist of the Kazakh Drama Theatre. In the late 30s he designed the following plays: ‘Kyzyl Sunkarlar’ by S. Seyfullin (1937), ‘Othello’ by W. Shakespeare (1938), ‘Khan-Kane’ by M. Auezov (1937-1940), ‘Yenlik-Kebek’ by A. Auezov (1937-1940), ‘Abai’ by M. Auezov (1940-1941) and others. Also, Kulakhmet worked as an artist of the Central Regional United Film Studio (TsOKS), since 1943 he worked at the film studio ‘Kazakhfilm’. His family, especially his mother, Latipa Hodzhikova, who had a fine taste and decorative gift, played a great role in Kulakhmet's upbringing. Kulakhmet's skill, great taste, knowledge of life and everyday life of the Kazakh people allowed him to cope well with the tasks at hand. Graphic works by Hodzhikov are widely known, they were devoted to the Kazakh landscape: ‘Forest in a wedge’ (1954), ‘Spruces’ (1960), ‘Jailau Ushkonyr’ (1969) and others.
