Nikolai Gavrilovich Khludov. Soviet and Kazakh artist, outstanding painter. He was born in Orel province on 25 November 1850. In 1872-1874 he received pedagogical training at the Odessa drawing school, and in 1876 - in St. Petersburg, continued his education in the art workshop of artist N. A. Gogelinsky. In Soviet times he played an important role in the professional training of the first Kazakh artists. He gave his first art lessons to S. Chuikov, A. Kasteev, A. Bortnikov, N. Soloviev, V. Ufimtsev and others. He came to Kazakhstan in 1879. He lived in Verny (now Almaty). He worked as a draftsman, participated as a topographer and artist in the expeditions of geologist I. V. Ignatyev and botanist A. N. Krasnov to study the Khan-Tengri mountain group (1886) and Professor I. V. Mushketov to study the Verny earthquake (1887). He was a member of the Turkestan circle of amateurs of archeology, founder of the Semirechensk department of the Russian Geographical Society. Participation in expeditions, public service, travelling on land surveying gave the artist the opportunity to accurately note and convey in everyday scenes the spirit and originality of the Kazakh people. Khludov painted landscapes, portraits, made sketches of everyday scenes, which served him as a basis for the creation of numerous paintings dedicated to the life of the Kazakh people. In 1904-1907 Khludov painted the first iconostasis of the Vernensky Voznesensky Cathedral, built according to the project of architect A. P. Zenkov. Numerous works by Khludov reflect the nature and life of South Kazakhstan of the pre-revolutionary period. In his paintings one can see the boundless steppe with its turquoise cloudless sky, groups of yurts, grazing herds and flocks - ‘Ploughing in spring’ (1911), ‘Waterers of crops’ (1913). His painting is somewhat dry, most of the paintings give the impression of undercoloured drawing, is ethnographic in nature. After the October Revolution, in the 20-30s, Khludov, in addition to a large number of paintings devoted to the life of Kazakh nomads, created works on historical and revolutionary themes. In 1910 the artist retired and devoted himself entirely to painting. In 1920 he organised a private art studio, where he studied with young amateurs of fine arts. His works are represented in the collections of museums in Moscow, St Petersburg, Bishkek and Almaty. The most significant part of his heritage is kept in the funds of the State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after A. Kasteev. скрыть
