Upon graduation from the school, Nikolai Ivanovich received small and large silver medals. Then, he completed his studies at the Academy of Arts (1879-1885), receiving the title of class artist of the 3rd degree. He drew for the magazine ‘World Illustration’. Nikolai Ivanovich is a representative of the old academic school. He was among the first Russian artists appointed as teachers at the Tashkent Real School. Also, he taught drawing lessons at the commercial school and in the cadet corps. Working in Tashkent, Nikolai Ivanovich did not leave his creative activity. He painted a lot of Tashkent and the whole Central Asia. He gave himself to the genre of landscape, but cityscapes in his work are rare. His paintings are full of completeness of expression and soft harmony of colours. Nikolai Ivanovich also liked to paint portraits, and often painted portraits of members of his family, wife, daughter. A portrait of a fair-haired girl in a blue dress has been preserved.
