Awarded the order of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, the Red Star. The name of the graphic artist Konstantin Baranov is widely known in Kazakhstan for his numerous illustrations to Kazakh fairy tales and stories. He was born in the village of Bolshoye Kozino, Nizhny Novgorod province in Russia on 3 June 1910 and lived in Novosibirsk until 1940. During this period in his art career Baranov was fond of themes from the life of metallurgical plant workers. In 1927-1930 he studied at the art workshop of I.L. Kopylov in Irkutsk. After moving to Kazakhstan in 1940 he illustrated the collection of poems ‘1916 year’, and in the following years the collections ‘Kozy-Korpesh and Bayan-Sulu’, ‘Kazakh heroic epic’ and others. From modern books he illustrated ‘Ali-Batyr’ by K. Azerbayev and ‘Botagoz’ by S. Mukanov. One of the brightest pages of Baranov's work is a series of linocuts to Uyghur folk tales by M.N. Karibov, executed in 1963. He made a significant contribution to the development of Kazakhstani graphics. Widely known are linocuts ‘Karaganda’ (1963), ‘Fishermen of Balkhash and Aral’ (1966), watercolours ‘At the Lake’ (1937), ‘On Manoeuvres’ (1938), lithographs ‘Repair of Marten’ (1961), Dzhambul (1971), Abai (1981) and others.
