Leonid Pavlovich Leontiev. Born on 24 August in St. Petersburg. Soviet artist-painter. National Artist of the Kazakh SSR (1974). Member of the Artists Union of Kazakhstan. Member of the Artists Union of the USSR. Honoured Art Worker of the Kazakh SSR (1961). Awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and medals. In 1939 he graduated from the All-Russian Academy of Arts in the workshop of B.V. Yoganson and left for permanent work in Almaty, where he was appointed head of the iso-department of the Department of Art, as well as engaged in teaching activities at the art school. Thus, he made a great contribution to the education of young artists of the republic. Leonid Leontiev created many works reflecting everyday life: ‘Collective Farm Bazaar’ (1940), ‘Kazakhstan carpet makers’ (1949), ‘Session of VASHNIL. Speaker Ibrai Zhakhaev’ (1952-1953, panels), “In the board of the collective farm” (1957), “Chabans” (1958). He also painted portraits of many Kazakh artists and artists: ‘Portrait of S. Kalmykov’, ‘Portrait of Roza Baglanova’, ‘Portrait of S. Khodzhikov’, ‘Portrait of N. Nurmukhamedov’, ‘Portrait of Hero of the Soviet Union Shemyakin’, ‘Portrait of artist K. Telzhanov’, ‘Portrait of sculptor E. Mergenov’, ‘Apples’ and others. In 1946 Leontiev created one of his best works - a portrait of the artist S. Kalmykov. In 1948 he wrote the picture ‘Mother and Son’, and in 1949 picture ‘Kazakhstan carpet weavers’, which he dedicated to the best masters of carpet weaving in Almaty. In recent years, the artist works a lot on landscape. In a series of Crimean landscapes and landscapes of Zailiyskiy Alatau one can see the artist's aspiration to renew his palette. Freed from heavy brown tones, Leontiev moves to lighter and airy colours. Leontief works a lot and as a graphic artist. He illustrated S. Mukanov's book ‘School of Life’, made numerous drawings and cartoons for the satirical magazine ‘Ara’ (‘Bumblebee’), a member of the editorial board of which he was from the day of its foundation (1956). Like many artists, Leontyev in the years of socialist realist pressure realised himself to a greater extent in paintings ‘for themselves’, rather than commissioned, official works. Expressive ascetic-simple objects in still lifes of different years. But nevertheless, it is in the works, which are devoted to unassuming themes, ordinary in its simplicity of the subjects, the artist created fascinating special pictorial manner of compositions. Being seriously ill, he painted what he saw from the window: flowering bushes, ‘Balconies’, ‘Tree Branches’ (the titles of the series). Sparkling in its boldness of diagonal composition, rhythm and full-sounding laconism of colour solution, the still life ‘Apples’ (1983), one of the last and best works of the master, is created in the best traditions of the avant-garde of the XX century. скрыть
